JANE ALLEN NODINE

Jane Allen Nodine is Professor of Art and director of the Curtis R. Harley Gallery at the University of South Carolina Upstate. Prior to joining the University she owned and operated Jane Nodine Hardwear, a full-service jewelry design and manufacturing company. Jane’s work has taken many forms over the years including drawing, painting, metals, installation and photography. She has exhibited throughout the US and in Europe, including national exhibitions at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts, the Mary Brogan Museum, Turchin Center for the Visual Arts, National Arts Club, NYC, South Carolina State Museum, Greenville Museum of Art, the Alte Kaserne Winterthur, Switzerland, and SECCA, Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art. In 2012 she will present a solo exhibition at the Kunstkomplex in Wupperthal, Germany. Recognized with numerous awards, Jane received an NEA/SECCA Southeastern Seven IV Fellowship from the Southeastern Center for Contemporary Art, and two South Carolina Arts Commission Artist Fellowships. In 2002 she was awarded the Belle W. Baruch Visiting Scholar Fellowship to Hobcaw Barony Plantation in Georgetown, South Carolina, where several of her photographs were published in "Plantation Between the Waters, A Brief History of Hobcaw Barony".


In 2006 Jane began research in encaustic wax and quickly developed a national presence through her participation in exhibitions and the National Encaustic Conference organized by Joanne Mattera. Jane’s work in has been selected for the inaugural edition of “Encaustic Works ’11”, to be published by R&F Handmade Paints Inc., and a series of her works were acquired by the Medical University of South Carolina for the Ashley River Towers Contemporary Carolina Collection, the largest body of contemporary art in South Carolina.


Jane is well known for her contributions to teaching in higher education and in 2011 she and colleague Rachel Snow received the SECAC Award for Outstanding Exhibition and Catalogue of Historical Materials for “Andy Warhol; The Andy Warhol Photographic Legacy Project”.  In 2008 Jane was recognized by the University of South Carolina Upstate with the Faculty Award for Scholarly and Creative Pursuits and in 2004 she received the SECAC Award for Teaching Excellence by the Southeastern College Art Conference and in 1999 the Bank of America Teaching Excellence Award at the University of South Carolina Upstate. Jane's career in art spans several decades and in 1999 she was selected by the South Carolina State Museum and the South Carolina Arts Commission as one of the “One Hundred Most Significant Artists in South Carolina During the 20th Century”. In 1998 Jane developed the USC Upstate Study Abroad program to Italy, leading five trips and serving as director through 2010.
